This paper will explore how the alienation of political action through bureaucratic formalism can be conceived as a process of becoming an object of the state.
This paper seeks to address this issue by demonstrating how the alienating of the state bureaucracy can be understood as a dialectical and continuous process affecting individual consciousness and political potential by embedding the individual in bureaucratic formalism.
Here, Marx recognizes the psychological aspect of state power as manifested through the secrecy of bureaucratic formalism.
Here Kafka situates this tension dialectically, showing the uneasy relationship between the desire and imperative to arrive at a 'right' perception of the bureaucratic formalism by which to control its alienating force, and the inherent inability to arrive a that 'right' perception because of the qualities of bureaucratic meaning.
By making the bureaucracy the totality of society, Kafka is able to show how existential alienation, or social isolation, maps on to the political alienation that occurs through bureaucratic formalism.
